"In Honour Of John Bishop" Dinner | Vancouver Event Photographer

With many years of having dined at Bishop's, this was a great evening in paying tribute to a very unique and talented chef. John Bishop has created numerous dishes, many that have become a favourite of mine. If you haven't yet dined at Bishop's, you must.

Hosted by Les Dames d'Escoffier of British Columbia, 100 guests were seated in a long hall and not only sat with John Bishop himself, but enjoyed a set dinner, with each dish created as an homage to the chef himself. Several chefs worked together to create a lovely menu. They had been taught by or had worked with John Bishop throughout his career. Les Dames did a marvellous job of organizing the event. Canadian chefs: Rob Feenie, Umberto Menghi, Vikram Vij, Michel Jacob and Michael Smith, were just a few of many chefs who attended the dinner.

I was very honoured to be a part of the evening. I would like to thank, The Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, for allowing me to cover this momentous occasion.

Wind Up Bird Café | Toronto Food Photographer

So a new restaurant and café has emerged in Toronto. The Wind Up Bird Café (owned by Sang Kim) offers a comfort food with fresh flavours and humble service. Decorated with lovely art and filled with yummy treats at the bar (muffins and more), the café offers a unique dining experience. I have yet to eat there myself, but I got the opportunity to take photographs of their up and coming brunch menu (which I was told, will launch this March). Eat up!

For my final portfolio in my Directed Studio class at OCAD U, I decided to embark on a new adventure: exploring food photography. I am hoping to make food look as delicious as they taste. This particular series was presented as my final portfolio of my first semester. The first image you see, was shot in Little India in downtown Toronto, where I got to experience the spicy and sweet taste of Puris. The images following were shot at the Chef's House by George Brown College. The students at the restaurant are chefs in training, who produced a wonderful lunch menu for me to photograph. Enjoy!

Ever wonder how you can combine a still image with a video? Time & Stillness was the theme of the first project from my Hybrid Photography class - where we learn how to use the dSLR as a video tool as well as being an image capturing tool. We looked at many videos to come up with a tableau of our own. In this case, I wanted to play with the idea of cake and that it is used in the typical ritual of birthdays and celebrations.

"The work plays with the absence and presence of a celebration.

The photograph is a picture of the cake itself lit up. The in-action capture of the sparkler and the candles, create a portrait of the cake in its entirety. The everlasting of the celebration is captured in the photograph. However, the video represents the celebration from beginning to the end. The image and the video help to convey a celebration or ritual shared between two people who are absent and present.

The two mediums play off one another in that the image represents an ever-lasting celebration that has no end.  Moreover, the video is a performance of the ritual.  The cake’s candles are blown out, then taken apart, and finally eaten. The stillness becomes the timeless piece. The image depicts an endless celebration, one that takes place everyday in society. On the other hand, the timepiece plays a sequence, a story with a beginning and an end.  To conclude, I feel that both mediums work well with one another as they both speak to the same subject matter but in different and effective ways."

Homemade Food Photos | Vancouver Food Photography

This past summer I worked for Daniela Ciuffa Photography. I learned the basics of lighting, from shooting in studio to shooting natural light. Moreover, I learned a lot about portrait photography, food photography and wedding photography. After three months of working with the fabulous Daniela, I can officially say that I gained lots of experience in the field of photography and cannot wait to put everything I have learned into my last year of uni. We spent a sunny afternoon shooting delicious homemade food on our patio with food photographer Martin Szabo who is amazing at what he does. My dad made a lot of his favourites (suckling pig belly) and mum her desserts and infamous pizza. The photos speak truly for the food. Everything looked and tasted delicious!
